http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz0db-uwN90In response to teacher feedback and personal discussion between myself and Maz, we decided to analyse more music videos that are similar to our genre. I decided to choose this video as it represents a "dirty rock" style. All of the locations are grunge'y. The band look similar to what we are trying to show, this can come in handy as similar shots can be incorporated into our music video.
The video starts with a long shot of the lead singer but of the back of him, this gives the audience a sense of confusion as they do not know who it is? and why they are staring at a blank wall. In time with the music the camera switches to a close up vertical pan of the lead singer. The focus is on the eye line, which is pointing away from the camera, then the singer looks directly into the lens, this immediately grabs the audiences attention and feels close to the band. After this a close up and a mid shot of the same scene is shown, this shows the guitarist in his own personal world and then fitting into the scene, the same expression of the guitarists face in both shots shows that he is at peace with his environment. A close up of twiddling fingers and tattoos shows the remembrance of their past and that they are still firmly in touch with this. The drummer is then shown in a similar setting to both the singer and the guitarist. The use of twiddling fingers is used to show anticipation as this is the opening of the song. In the first 15 seconds of the video the audience is eager for the main beat to kick in and is aware that the band is close together even from a crooked past which would resemble the time between their last album and the current.
At 15 seconds it shows a voodoo doll hanging from the ceiling at a long shot. This is used to portray their past? a member of the band? this cuts straight to the member of the band, highlighting his eyes, this gives clear indication what he is staring at. At 23 seconds the camera zooms into the lead singer from a close up to an extreme close up on his lips as he is singing the song. The same process is repeated as in the first 15 seconds, by showing a member of the band in a distraught location and changing camera angles in time with the beat. After this has happened, a live performance is filmed. This is switched between continual footage of the lead singer but now the camera zooming out and the live performance. This is used to keep an element of continual action where the audience would feel at ease seeing a familiar location. This also allows to show a wide variety of events while keeping a structured storyline. Most of the individual guitar parts in the song are not portrayed with their instrument, when these instances occur the image is usually showing the voodoo doll and seeing what is going to happen in the near future. By not following the conventional rules, the video looks very rebellious.
The video uses lots of eye-line matches to keep a consistent visual rhythm between the band mates. Also the lighting is used especially well, the quick flashing lights resemble lighting. The lighting is focused on the band members and the wall at the back of the shot, this could be used to resemble a large gap between themselves and reality? or it could resemble the only two things with a solid structure.
The Pinnacle of the song is at 2:50 where the voodoo doll is smashed into a ball of smoke, this action is then repeated on the various locations previously used, this could aid the narrative by showing a domino effect as once one thing is broken, others quickly follow. After this event has happened all of the lighting is now red, to show a more deeper and fuller life element to their performance. Also now the guitar is dominant in both the audio and visual parts of the song. Once each member hits the voodoo doll, the other member explodes, which resembles each member accusing the other? or taking the anger out on each other.
good work.
