Carl Barat- Run With The Boys

I chose this video not just because Carl Barat is a member of the Libertines, but that the video is very typical of the genre.

Our Idea

Dan and I have decided to use the song Can't Stand Me Now by The Libertines for our music video. The narrative will insinuate a break up and show the man trying to get back his girlfriend. It will begin in a bare bedroom and progress to an urban setting.

Busted Storyboard

As a class we created a storyboard on post-it notes for the first 1.14 of the Busted song What I go to School For. As a pair Dan and I drew the last 14 seconds, noting times and camera angles.

Editing Our Prelim

On Friday we uploaded the videos to the Macs and began editing our music video in groups. What we found was that although some clips weren't exactly right, the lip syncing was perfect and with some tweaking we cut the first half in exact time with the music. We completed the first half of editing on Friday and found that it took longer than we expected as it took a lot of work to cut the clips exactly to the song. We also had to keep going into the other room to check exactly what clip came next in the song.

On Tuesday we finished the editing. We had a bit more trouble than we did with the first half as we were missing some clips but we managed to edit it well enough so that the lip syncing still fit. Overall for my practical I learnt that editing can often take a lot more time and effort than expected and it's important to get everything exactly right at the planning and filming stages.

Filming Busted Preliminary

On Tuesday we began to film our Busted video. I was given the role of director and decided where we filmed and when we filmed which scenes. However, the pairs who storyboarded each section also filmed and directed. Firstly we changed into costume, went over our storyboards and watched the video again. We had some trouble when we couldn't use the room we had originally planned to, but in the second lesson we filmed the outdoor scenes. We had little to no trouble, our only issues were getting the band and other actors confident enough to perform their scenes. After a few cuts we got the scene finished. We then filmed the indoor scenes in the AV studio with it set out as a classroom. We had issues such as lighting, missing equipment that was used in the video, and more problems with confidence. However we overcame these and managed to finish filming in one lesson, which we were proud of. We managed to get every single shot just about the same as in the video, which was helped by our meticulous planning.

Planning Busted Preliminary

In preparation for filming and editing our What I Go to School For music video. We then each wrote a risk assessment and composed a prop list, deciding who would bring in what. The assessment consisted of hazards such as burns, trips, falls etc whilst the prop list contained ties, shirts, guitars, pencils, etc. As a class we watched the video and allotted 10 seconds of the 1 minute 14 of the video to each pair. Dan and I received the last 14 seconds so we got to work drafting a storyboard and finally drawing it up on post it notes. It took a few attempts watching the video and noting the exact seconds and camera angles and image on screen before we got it exactly right, but we tried our best. We then contributed to the group storyboard, which consisted of everyone's section stuck on the board in post its. A photograph of this was taken and is in a previous post of mine.

Lip Syncing Activity

To practice for our music video, on Friday Dan and I lip synced together to Elton John and Kiki Dee's Don't Go Breaking My Heart. It was difficult at first but after a few takes we got the hang of it and I think we were successful.

Weezer-Memories

This video has inspired me as i really like the switch between professionally filming the artist and a third party camera, this allows the audience to see behind the scenes of the band and feel a lot closer to the artists personality

Our Pitch

Market Research

Existing videos of this genre tend to base themselves around an urban lifestyle for example:
Arctic Monkeys-When The Sun Goes Down
The Enemy- Had Enough, Its not ok
The Fratellis- Henrietta
Yet this is only from the British Indie scene. Another common feature in Brit-Indie is the use of live performances, in such productions as The Libertines - Can’t stand me now. This is generally used as one of the first music videos a band produces, due to lack of funds, being signed to a small record deal or emphasising their live performances, therefore commonly used before a band is set to go on tour. American indie bands such as the Raconteurs tend to use stop-motion in their videos and solely emphasise on the band or the narrative and rarely combining the two.
Record labels associated with the indie scene are Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music, followed by EMI and Universal and Island recordings. EMI is not used as much compared to the 80’s due to strong publicity including bands such as the Sex Pistols, who recorded EMI on their hit album ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’, who represented EMI as not allowing the band to do what they wanted, due to the controversial song God Save the Queen with the lyrics “God save the Queen, She ain’t no human being”. This controversy has not been forgotten and for many indie bands which aim to go against the generic road of music, this is seen as a bad move. Many bands use independent record labels
Music Videos are published through different forms of media. Television, such as purpose built tv channels such as NME tv and MTV. These areas have grown drastically due to the greater accessibility of sky TV. In previous years terrestrial tv channels e.g BBC used programs such as Top Of The Pops to show videos and saturday morning tv such as T4 on channel 4. Since 2005 Youtube has been the main passageway for record companies to promote their music videos, in recent years music tuesdays on Youtube highlights certain artists videos and places them on the Youtube homepage creating worldwide publicity. Social Networking such as Facebook and Twitter has let artists contact their audience without any costs (especially twitter) this has led to many independent companies and unsigned artists have much wider appeal than in previous generations. In the 90’s and early 00’s the lack of internet access but widespread use of computers led to music videos being included on cd singles and extra content on albums but it wasn’t until 2001 that iTunes was introduced and consumers added music to their computers. Before this CD players were mainly used which meant the extra video content was not easily accessed. Recent methods of showing music videos are through iTunes, they offer music videos individually at £1.29 as of October 12th 2005. This let consumers place music videos onto their mp4 players and ipods. The introduction of tablet computers and the iPad has led to interactive newspapers such as the Guardian to feature music videos in their music section therefore consumers can experience the reviewed music instantaneously.

The Libertines

Pete Doherty

Carl Barat

Gary Powell

John Hassall

The Libertines formed in 1997, in London. In the early 00's, the Libertines gained a number 2 single and a number 1 album in the UK charts and their second album won the NME second best album of the year award. In 2004 the band split, due to both Doherty's addiction to Cocaine and Heroine and the arguments and tension between Barat and Doherty. Pete had allready begun his side project of babyshambles, while the Libertines were still recording their new album. The song "Can't Stand Me Now" is about the love-hate relationship between Barat and Doherty with the lyrics "Have We Enough To Keep This Together?"

The Libertines are a mixture of Indie Rock and 1977 style Punk Rock. Band that inspire them were Sex Pistols, The Jam, Oasis, The Smiths, Velvet Underground and The Clash. They are currently signed to "Rough Trade Records".

Current themes expressed in their videos are of Live Gigs, Destroyed Society and the relationship between Barat and Doherty.

Busted (Dan and Josh Version)

Pre Production
In preparation for filming we organised that everyone should bring in uniform or at least shirts, this was successful for the later part of filming in which students were reminded. Therefore in my production i will either have to provide the costume or remind my actor frequently. We also needed a place to film, this was originally going to be done above our school library, unfortunately we had't checked this, the room was therefore booked so we had to make a quick decision to film in one of our media classrooms which made our filming a bit darker as the room had restricted lighting, this would not be the case in my production as we will have our own lighting, so our location would not need to be limited. We storyboarded the Busted music video in small groups covering 10 seconds, this was done to be time saving, yet this led to problems as each group's storyboard was of different detail, therefore our director wasn't as accurate on each shot, the lack of detail also led to some shots being lost and not recorded. In my own production i will not be copying a video so i would not have to look at different existing shots, when i produce my own storyboard, both myself and maz will work together and produce an accurate 1 second shots storyboard.

Production
While filming we encountered some problems, such as timing. We ended up filming a lot more than we had planned too and this led to us running out of time in our lesson, this meant we had to film into valuable editing time, this will not be the case when making our final product as we will be filming in our own time therefore we can afford to over-run if necessary. The size of the location was also a problem, especially the depth of the room as we did not have enough room to film the shots at the front of the classroom when filming Josh as Charlie on the desks. To counteract this we had to move a row of tables so the same effect was maintained that was in the original video.

Post Production
I felt the editing was rushed to meet deadlines, firstly we had to keep referring to the original video and not having accurate enough storyboards, this led to clips being cut too short, leaving gaps and audio jolts. To counteract this we shortened the speed of the clips to extend their visual length. Once editing we noticed how off time the lip syncing was, in some proffesional music videos they sing the lyrics as the audio is extracted from the clip, we will use this in our final piece as it shows clear accuracy and would be a lot less noticeable to the viewers.

30 Seconds To Mars- Kings and Queens

Genre= Hard Rock, Emo, Alternative

Genre Characteristics= Dark military style costume, lots of attention focused on hairstyles.

This video appeals to me as it tells a story in such a short amount of time, also it is in a completely new direction in terms of 30 seconds to mars music videos. The video brings together the community of their fans, which is essential for a succesfull rock band. The video doesn't move in time with the beat of the song which i feel helps it to flow more naturally.

The location of the band is very unique as they are on high ground which gives the audience the feel that they are looking over them. What also works well is the continual jump between members of the band in the bike riding situation. The video reaches a peak at 3:52 where the bike rider is hit by a car, a new equiilibrium is not usually formed in a music video and this brings shock to the audience.

The actions of the lead singer (jared leto) such as reaching out his arm when the man is knocked off his bike brings unity between the media text and the band. The mise en scene is important as it is set in a urban new york location, this helps the costumes as it shows a wide range of personalities as some look like they belong in the location and some look like they are lost.

Genre= Rock, Alternative
Genre Characteristics= Instruments are seen visually, attempt to act cool and unique. Surreal and Dark perspective.
Relationship Between Visual and Lyrics= There is no real link between the two, the only link is the constant use of "We" as it refers to the group of cyclists as being united.Close Ups Of Artist and Star Image Motifs=There are many close ups of the band and of individual members. In this video they have also used close ups of the cyclists who are their fans instead of using actors as it relates to the closeness of themselves and their fans (the echelon). The star image motif is achieved with the location being in a big city but with a naturalistic and individual style to each of them. This is achieved with their apparel being plain and "affordable" and focusing attention on emotions and their physical actions. Is Their Reference To The Notion Of Looking= Their is reference to the notion of looking, using the long shots of the location this can be seen as what the band are seeing. We expect to see a close up of the road when we see the close ups of the cyclists but this is vacant. This emphasises the emotions expressed as we can focus on what is going on mentally instead of physically. Are There Intertextual References? There aren't any intertextual references as the majority of the locations are naturalistic and unchanged. The only reference is the bands symbol on the back of the singers jacket. The use of non-intertextual references fits this video as we focus on the action and the symbolism of using a city landscape. Is The Video Performance, Narrative or Concept Based? How Much Of Each? The Video is evenly split between narative and performance and are in two seperate locations. The narrative is based around peoples seperate lives that are not seen by everyone, about how someone is not always what you expect them to be. The performance is based mainly around a live gig but with the city being the audience, the band act as if they expect applause or feedback from the city.

Blink 182 - Always

Genre= Pop Punk, Alternative
Genre Characteristics= Bright Colours, Low Key Punk, Messy Haircuts, Tatoos, Modern Mise En Scene, Teenage Past-Times.
Relationship Between Visual and Lyrics= Romance, "iv been here before a few times" tried hard to win the girl. Actions in lyrics followed on screen "hold you, touch you"
Close Ups Of Artist and Star Image Motifs=Close up of the band performing but still within the 3 sectioned video. The mise en scene suits the target audience and the genre but not of the band. The mise en scene is very "affordable" and relates more to the audience.
Is Their Reference To The Notion Of Looking= References to the notion of looking include that we presume all three of them have been dating the same girl for a long time, we presume from the start that they know each other as they are all wearing the same attire.
Are There Intertextual References? There are instruments laying around the apartment that would presume she is associated with the band, the band is on a sticker on the girls fridge, her flooring matches the shoes of Mark Hoppus, also there is the police line do not cross banner and the skateboard from the Girl At The Rock Show Video also by Blink 182.
Is The Video Performance, Narrative or Concept Based? How Much Of Each? The Video is mainly narrative but performances are interweaved into the chorus by using instruments in the scene and using other objects such as the tv to portray the clips. Although the narrative does revolve around the concept of Blink 182.

Example - Kickstarts

Genre= Electro, British Hip Hop, Grime

Genre Characteristics= Designer Labels

I chose this music video as it mixes a variety of different genres together to create a unified audience. I encountered it by watching the NME music channel, this influenced my interpretation of the text as it was shown on the weeks top 20 tracks. This influenced me as i would have known the popularity of the song already existed, therefore i would focus my attention to why it is popular. I recognise the branding in the video, such as nike and adidas in the shoe movement at the start of the video, also the Brit hip-hop element is represented by the location being very social realistic and not glamorous like in regular hip-hop videos.

The video stretches the usual conventions of the genre by appearing positive and very indie. This is due to the artists hairstyle and clothes and due to the video being about a love story, which are commonly frowned upon in the grime scene, maybe this is due to the artists new pathway from a new album as this being the first single from this. The positive outlook is clearly represented when the screen is split into three where various objects and people make up a human body, again this is used to match the style of the song which is different to the usual conventions of the artist and to appeal to a much wider target audience. The song is a summer hit, therefore the video is aiming to be very bright and bubbly and due to the current economic climate songs which make you feel upbeat and buoyant are the more popular due to escapism.

The video is clearly aimed at teenagers of both sex, and young adults. The festival and club scene being the niche genre, this is reflected due to the beat in the song which is emphasised as the video is on beat with the bass. It makes the assumption that we are all united in class as the video features a wide range of different people all enjoying the music. The video presumes your age is within the target market as key brands and movements associated with teenagers are used such as the excessive mirrors and the furnishings of the house. The ethnicity is presuming us to be white due to the mise en scene and the majority of white actors. But the music appeals to every genre as our culture is very diverse it is hard to pin point what appeals to each genre as we all take aspects from every culture in our society. The video assumes we have interests in women and shopping, due to the brand mentioning and the heterosexual love story. The text applies to me that love is hard to come by and stick with as the man tries everything but rarely succeeds, it also shows that everyone can come together with a song and that we can all be doing the same thing at the same time, but this questions our unique position in society.

The text takes for granted the knowledge of heterosexual love and the popularity of brands. It also takes for granted racial harmony being accepted, as 30 years ago featuring a black person in a music video would be questioned. I feel i am part of the 'ideal reader' but this is due to the extensive target market, as i feel the video only appeals to part of my ideal genre.

At the lyric "might be holding your hand but i'm holding it loose" the video shifts, as previously we thought their love was true and ongoing. The video expects me to feel compassionate towards the male, as it he tries to make things right, but we feel sorry for the woman as we feel the man is making the situation hard for her. But this depends on your gender and your experience in relationships and even culture. The video does not have a targeted expectation from you as it takes us down different paths due to the varying faces and emotions. There is a penalty of not responding as the ending to the video will not be relevant and you would feel the video would not appeal to you, so the video makes you tell yourself the story.

I feel myself "reading against the grain" due to the non-set expectations of the video, i feel there is a deeper meaning to each split screen emotion, making me watch the video again. This is common in many videos to promote the video, but this marketing scheme is not always portrayed in this way, some of the editing used is common but story and editing together is not very common with this genre.
