Back Covers

Whilst it's not the most aesthetically pleasing of covers, the picture is a really good image of what they're trying to represent. I could imitate this with pictures of cigarettes or alcohol, however this picture of prescription drugs clearly communicates what they want to. The font here is small and out of the way as they want the picture to speak. It's also an image that could make the target audience feel quite uncomfortable, were I to choose to depit the drugs that Pete Doherty uses I could have the same effect. However I think I would use cigarettes or alcohol to reach a wider audience.

This is another that I like due to the usage of a band photo. It's a very simple outdoor photograph, but it portrays the band well and is 'cute' as they have their hoods up and are all smiling. This represents the genre and band well, too. Obviously with my band they wouldn't look as friendly, but I could still recreate something similar. I kind of like how the song titles are laid out but there is almost too much space between the photo and titles.

I've posted this as an example of a cover I don't like. The rest of the case works really well but this is too simple and dull. The barcode etc take up far too much space in comparison to the titles and even the band name. I do like the way they used the band name and album title at the top to grab your attention, however the song titles are small and despite being in the middle they don't take up enough space at all, especially considering there isn't even an image to accompany them.

I really like the simplicity of The Xcerts back cover. As this is part of a full digipak the inside, front and lyrics booklet are all quite complex and have a lot of photos on them so this is a nice break. It also means that the song titles speak for themselves. However on my product I don't believe I will be doing something this simple as it's important to show a variety of skills. After seeing this I'm reminded of the necessary things that need to go onto our own digipaks, such as the name of the recording company and the barcode. I will however try to make these more subtle than they are here.

I really like this artwork as it is actually all artwork. It's a very simple image that continues around the rest of the CD case. Due to issues with photoshoots and people not being able to get anywhere because of the snow I may have to create a case that is at least mostly artwork, so it's inspiring to see how well it can work. The colours work really nicely together and the large white font makes it easy to see and read.

This is similar to an idea I had for my own back cover. I'd planned to maybe have a photograph of the band on the back as I'd seen it on a Good Charlotte cover and really liked the way it was done, here we can see New Found Glory sat on stairs in black and white. This is very simple but effective as it blends in well with the bottom half of the case which is also in monochrome. The picture is similar to the style that I would aim to achieve as the band look laid back, rock, and like they haven't put any effort in for the shoot.

This Jimmy Eat world cover is really clever. Firstly I like the way that the song titles are in the centre of the page - this works well because really, they should be the centre of attention as they are the main article on the back cover of any CD case. I also like the way that the barcode etc are at the very side of the case - out of the way. The match burning with the words in the centre of the flame is really clever and looks great and I think I'd like to at least try to recreate something similar with a cigarette as this would represent our band better than a match. The darkness of the case in contrast with the brightness of the flame also makes the song titles stand out really well.

This Kooks cover is almost identical to an idea I had in mind for part of my digipak that I would really like to use. It's the band either playing or rehearsing, sat around, relaxed. In my cover they'd be smoking and there'd probably be a Union Jack in there someplace but I really like this one. The font for the song lyrics is really small but in this case it's okay because the band are the focal point and it's a really nice, soft, out of focus picture.
